Get to know your computer better!!

Have you ever imagined knowing all the characteristics of your own computer without opening it? In our first post we recommended that you download an operating system called Hiren’s Boot CD, which is the tool we are going to use to do this task. This operating system will help you to collect useful information from your computer without having to open your own operating system. Plus, it also includes a little version of Windows XP, which you could use in case your current OS does not work.

You can get information from your computer directly from Windows, but it is limited and not always reliable. However we will teach you to use both ways of collecting it.

Using Windows:

This is probably the easiest way, but, as we already said, we are only able to know the basic features of the computer. There are two ways of doing this:

  • Go to Control Panel (in the Start menu) and look for system properties. It will show you your operating system, your microprocessor´s model and its frequency, your RAM memory and your type of system (32-bits or 64-bits). In  our computer we have got these characteristics:
    • Operating System: Windows 7 Home Premium
    • Microprocessor: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU and its frequency is: 3.40GHz.
    • RAM memory: 8.00 GB (3.87 able to use)
    • Type of system: 64-bits

  • The other way of doing it is going to Devices Administrator. Once you entered System Properties, you can see at the left of the screen a link which says Device Administrator. Click there and you will be able to see further information of your computer. The main aspects to consider are:
    • Processor: our processor (Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.39GHz) is an octacore, which means that it has 8 cores.
    • Memory: our memory controller is A2F263W8 IDE
    • Disks: TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 ATA Device and the DVD and CD-ROM: HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH24NS95 ATA Device
    • Adaptors and cards:
      • Screen adaptor : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650
    • Integrated peripherals:
      • Screen: Monitor PnP
      • Mouse : compatible with HID
      • Keyboard: HID keyboard
      • Ports: Printer (LPT1) and comunication port (COM1)

 Using Hiren’s Boot CD:

There are many tools included in this OS. We are going to use CPU-Z, which is in the Mini Windows XP, and the DOS Programs (unfortunately we are not able to use the DOS Programs because none of the applications of System Information worked, even though we checked the ISO with the MD5 Summer). We recommend you to do first the mini Windows XP process. Go to the boot menu and open the Hiren´s Boot. Once you have opened it, you will see many applications in black and white. The two we are going to use are:

  • Mini Windows XP: When you open it, click on an icon called “1024×720”, it will improve the screen´s resolution. Next, open the program wich has a wrench and a screwdriver making a cross, called “HBCD menu”. Then select the tab “Programs”.
    • CPU-Z: it is the first tool to use. After clicki9ng on Programs go to System Information, and then CPU-Z (HBCD Menu/Programs/System Information/CPU-Z). This program gives us different information organised in tabs:
      • CPU: Here we can see specific information about our CPU, such as the name of our processor (Intel Core i7 3770), its technology (the sizes of the processor: 22nm), the type of system which you can see in “Instructions” (The numer 64 means that we have a 64-bit system) and the number of cores and threads. It is important to compare this data with the one we extracted from Windows, because the might be opposite information comparing to our main OS. Here happens that it only recognises one core instead of the 8 we have.CPU Home
      • Memory: Here we see the information about our RAM memory. It has a dual channel (it makes the computer take less time to work), the size is 8192MB (more or less 8GB), its type ofmemory is a DDR3 (the newest one) and its frequency (665.2MHz).Memory Home
      • SPD: Here we can see the slots of our RAM memory and its size between other data. Our computer has 2 slots of 4096MB, which add up to the total size of our RAM: 8192MB. The max. speed of each of them is 667MHz.SPD_Slot 1Home.jpgSPD_Slot 3 Home.jpg
    • Drivers: inside the Programs tab, we can find another tab called Drivers and we have to open the program called 3DP Chip (HBCD/Programs/Drivers/3DP Chip). This application is really useful to recover and download the driver, which are used to control and and regulate different parts of the motherboard. Double click on the box of the driver you want and the download will start immediately.Drivers Home.jpg

Even though Hiren’s Boot CD is a little OS and does not take too much room, it is full of useful and different applications and programs can be used for many purposes. We have focused this post on getting information from the computer and checking it from many sources. We hope you found it handy and you learned how to do it without dying in the process.
